I've used calligraphy in a surprising amount of the projects that I've worked on. Whether it takes the form of violent jagged strokes, or elegant swashes, the human element inherent to calligraphy is palpable, and I think that's what people connect with. The process is fascinating to me — in many cases, the vibe that I'm after will be pretty well-defined in my mind from the get-go, but with calligraphy you can't meticulously craft the end product. Because It's visual appeal comes from the energy of the strokes, it forces me to work loose. In most cases, this usually means that I end up going through hundreds of repetitions until "the one" magically appears.
This is a collection of miscellaneous illustrations, taken from both my professional and personal work. Although I have my own personal preferences, I like to try on different hats, adapting and borrowing styles and techniques to meet the needs of each particular project.
I'm new to storyboarding, but I really enjoy the way it requires me to combine my illustration skills with a cinematic sensibility. Visualizing how composition, motion, and sequence are used to construct the narrative and desired emotional impact is an engrossing challenge that engages multiple kinds of thinking.
